Preparing for reinstallation
Before starting the reinstallation process, it is important to uninstall any previous version of the Office Suite. This helps prevent software conflicts and ensures a clean installation.
You can do this by going to Control Panel on Windows or using Finder on Mac. After uninstalling, restart your computer to ensure all changes have been applied.
Reinstalling Microsoft 365 or the Office 2021 Suite
Step 1: Check system requirements
Before you begin, it’s important to make sure your computer or Mac meets the system requirements for installing Microsoft 365 or Office 2021.
Step 2: Sign in to download and install
- Go to www.office.com and sign in with your Microsoft account. If you’re using Microsoft 365 operated by 21 Vianet, sign in with your work or school account at login.partner.microsoftonline.cn.
- For Microsoft 365 Germany, use portal.office.de. Sign in using the account associated with that version of Microsoft 365, which can be a Microsoft, work, or school account.
Step 3: Installation process:
- If you signed in with a Microsoft account: On the Microsoft 365 home page, select “Install apps” and then “Install.”
- If you signed in with a work or school account: On the home page, select “Install apps.” For Microsoft 365 operated by 21 Vianet, go to login.partner.microsoftonline.cn/account. For Microsoft 365 Germany, go to portal.office.de/account. Select “Microsoft 365 apps” to begin the installation.
Step 4: Choose the version
The 64-bit version is installed by default unless you already have a 32-bit version of Microsoft 365 or Office installed. To change versions, you need to uninstall Microsoft 365 first and then choose the version you want during the new installation.
Step 5: Complete the installation
Follow the prompts in the “Install Microsoft 365” section to complete the installation. Depending on your browser, you may need to click “Run”, “Configure” or “Save File”. Accept the User Account Control prompt if necessary.
Step 6: Activate the product
To activate, open a Microsoft 365 app, such as Word, and accept the license agreement. Microsoft 365 or Office will be activated and ready to use.
Reinstalling previous versions (Office Suite 2019, 2016, 2013)
To reinstall Office 2019, 2016, or 2013, follow these steps:
Step 1: Access the Microsoft Account Dashboard
Go to your Microsoft account dashboard and, if you haven’t signed in yet, select “Sign in”.
Step 2: Log in with the associated Microsoft account
Sign in using the Microsoft account associated with that version of Microsoft 365.
Step 3: select services and subscriptions
At the top of the page, select “Services and subscriptions”. When you find the Microsoft 365 product you want to install, select “Install”.
Step 4: Choose the Language and Bit Version

Step 6: Allow changes to the device
If you see the User Account Control prompt that says “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”, click “Yes.”
Step 7: Complete the installation
The installation is complete when the phrase, “Ready! Office is installed.” An animation will play to show you where to find Office applications on your computer. Select “Close”.
Step 8: Locate Microsoft 365 apps
Follow the instructions in the window to find the Microsoft 365 apps. For example, depending on your version of Windows, select “Start” and scroll until you find the app you want to open, such as Excel or Word, or type the name of the application in the search box.
Step 9: Activate Microsoft 365
Start using a Microsoft 365 app right away by opening any app, like Word or Excel. In most cases, Microsoft 365 will be activated when you launch an app and after you agree to the License Terms by clicking “Accept.” And it will be done!
